There is no such thing as a future-proof career. I think about this whenever I write about advances in generative AI. Is there any sense that I am contributing to the promotion of my eventual replacement? Perhaps But don’t worry, that’s my problem. As for you, my roboticist friend, you’ll be just fine.
While the past several years have been tough for the tech industry at large, the robotics industry has remained largely untouched. I say To a large extent Here’s because, just as future-proof careers are not a thing, no industry is completely immune to job losses. iRobot is still a recent example.
But then again, there’s good news for you, the roboticist. At least for as long as I’ve been covering this industry, there’s been no shortage of open roles. These jobs are always on the move, from giant corporations like Amazon to new startups that haven’t even announced their first product yet. Whether you choose the relative security of a large company or the agile innovation of a small team is entirely up to you.
In any case, there is plenty to choose from.
