Playing a role where your body is artificially enlarged, you’re constantly connected to tubes, and you spend large chunks of time immersed in a mysterious fluid is obviously not easy. but that’s exactly it stellan skarsgård Had to do this not once, but twice Play the role of the evil Baron Harkonnen in denis villeneuve dune Movies. And while the actor admitted the process was “hell,” it sounds like it was worth it.
“I went through hell, yes,” internal management and the actor told io9, “But it was a very friendly hell. It took five people eight hours a day to work on me in the morning, and they were my dear friends. And there were some of the best people in the prosthetics business. So I had a great time right there.”
Co-star Dave Bautista, who plays Baron’s nephew Rabban, said that Skarsgård’s preparation changed the mood on the set and how his fellow actors approached him. “This is very serious,” the former Marvel actor told io9. “We’re respectful because we know it’s rough – the experience he’s gone through, like what he’s living with and dealing with. And you can tell through the conversation while he’s working that he’s already tired because he’s already been sitting in the makeup chair eight hours before we start work. Eight hours, you’re usually leaving work. He is just starting work. And so it’s very respectful of him and what he’s going through. We respect their time very much. It’s everyone from top to bottom. But the actor was also well aware that he was suffering.
One can assume that this torment will get even worse when Barron spends large portions of both films doused in a mysterious dark liquid. But, as Skarsgård tells it, that part was a lot easier than the makeup.
“They make sure it’s warm enough for you, but it was somewhat cooler than the air temperature, because it was very hot in the summer in Budapest at that time,” he said. “So it felt good. I didn’t need to keep my cooling device on. But it’s a mixture…it’s not actually oil, but it’s water and gelatin, I think. And then there is some oil on top of it which is black. And I don’t dare ask what’s in it,
But we know what Skarsgard’s performance is: a lot of sacrifice. See how it plays out Dune: Part 2 Opens March 1.
