Have you seen the claim on social media that Google is “sunset”? Gmail Is this coming August? It appears that a screenshot of Google’s official announcement on the X has gone viral, but it is completely fake.
“We’re reaching out to share an important update about Gmail. “After years of connecting millions of people around the world, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, Gmail’s journey is coming to an end,” the viral notice reads.
“As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially shut down, ending its service. “This means that from this date, Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails,” the fake notice continues.
Fake screenshot has been seen 1 million times At the time of this writing X. But, again, it’s not real. The joke appears to be a photoshopped version of the notice that was issued last year informing users that Gmail Basic HTML View was being discontinued.
Google did not immediately respond to emailed questions Thursday afternoon.
