No, Elizabeth Warren doesn’t endorse Bitcoin despite viral story

[ad_1]

Have you seen a story on social media recently claiming that Senator Elizabeth Warren has endorsed Bitcoin? Given Warren’s intense skepticism about crypto and her advocacy for more regulation for the industry, this would be quite a change. But the claim that Warren raised a flag over the US Capitol in support of Satoshi Nakamoto is extremely misleading.

“BREAKING: Elizabeth Warren signs a certificate to honor #Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto with ceremonial flag hoisting. ‘Americans will be forever grateful,’ Bitcoin Magazine tweeted. on Thursday,

The magazine also published photos to show the certificate, which praised the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. But there’s just one big problem: Anyone can obtain an official looking certificate from Warren’s office as part of a federal program that allows members of the public to fly the American flag in someone’s honor. In fact, more than 100,000 flags are flown for the people every year,

The US Capitol Flag Program was established in 1937 to let Americans request that a flag be flown over the Capitol in someone else’s honor. People can request that the flag be flown through their senator or member of Congress, and Warren also has a flag on her website online form Which people can fill out to make their requests – for a fee, of course. Each flag flown is given to the requestor with the information they have provided, including the name and the reason they are honored.

The flag may also come with a certificate that includes the person’s name and the reason they were honored. The certificates appear to include Senator Warren’s signature, although it is unclear whether the Massachusetts Democrat actually signs each one.

Satoshi Nakamoto’s certificate, as shown in photos shared by Bitcoin Magazine on X reads: “To mark Bitcoin’s 15th anniversary, the first truly inclusive financial system that is providing new economic freedoms to populations previously ignored by both public and private institutions. “Americans will be forever grateful.”

To make the story even stranger, Bitcoin Magazine claims that an organization called Pubkey “noticed” that Warren had flown a pro-Bitcoin flag. Pubki is a “Bitcoin Bar” in New York Opened in 2022.

Pubki received a copy of the certificate honoring Satoshi Nakamoto from an anonymous donor space chat on x The problem arose on Thursday evening due to poor audio quality. Chat members debated whether an intern might have signed the certificate, insisting that Warren himself might have signed it. One attendee joked that Warren “never does anything wrong” and jokingly called her a “great senator”, suggesting that she actually signed the certificate knowing full well what she was doing. Have done. However, that part is still unclear.

Warren is widely despised in the cryptocurrency community for criticizing Bitcoin and various crypto companies. Politico has come this far call his actions A “crusade against crypto,” which makes him an obvious target for such trolling efforts. But whatever the motives of the people who ordered the flag for Satoshi Nakamoto through Warren’s office, it would be very interesting to know if they signed the certificate themselves.

Warren’s press office did not immediately respond to emailed questions Thursday evening. We will update this post if we get any response.
