MUMBAI: A huge crowd gathered outside the Ghatkopar police station for several hours on Sunday evening where Mufti Salman Azhari, a islamic preacherwas detained by the police as part of a hate speech case registered in Gujarat.
Gujarat police arrived in the city on Sunday and Azahari was arrested and taken to Ghatkopar police station for official formalities. Having heard about Azhari’s detention, a crowd began to gather near the police station, demanding his release. The crowd did not leave the scene despite police requests and late at night reportedly blocked the road, disrupting traffic. The police had to forcefully evict the crowd and the officers announced over loudspeakers that they had to leave the scene and go home. Traffic was paralyzed and crowds began to gather near the police station late in the evening. Azhari’s supporters demanded the preacher’s release.
Until Sunday evening, there was no information on whether Azhari had been arrested or was still in custody.
Police in Gujarat’s Junagadh arrested two people on Saturday after a video of an inflammatory speech allegedly delivered by the preacher went viral on social media, a police officer said. The speech was delivered at an open-air event in Junagadh on the night of January 31, he said. After the video went viral, an FIR was registered against Azhari and local organizers Mohammad Yousuf Malek and Azim Habib Odedara under sections 153B of the Indian Penal Code (promoting enmity between different religious groups) and 505 (2 ) (making statements conducive to public misdeeds).
Local youth, including many Azhari supporters, had gathered on the main road in front of the police station. Azhari was inside the police station. The Gujarat police wanted to take him to Junagad in connection with the case registered there.
Additional police forces from neighboring police stations and reserved police were called in to control the crowd. Lathicharges were reported to disperse the crowd.
