AGRA: In response to an RTI query, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has disclosed information based on historical documents from a 1920 gazette about MathuraIt is Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple Complex. By attaching an extract from the gazette of November 1920, the BUT said in his response: “Parts of the Katra mound which are not in the possession of the Nazul tenants and on which once stood a temple of Keshavdev which was dismantled and the site used for the mosque of Aurangzeb…”
The RTI was filed by Ajay Pratap Singh, a resident of Mainpuri in UP, and the response came from the office of the ASI superintendent archaeologist, Agra circle. Singh had sought specific information on the “dismantling” of Kechavdev Temple – claimed to be part of the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple complex. THE RTI Responsewithout specifically mentioning the words “Krishna Janmabhoomi”, confirmed the demolition of the ancient Keshavdev temple on the disputed site by the Mughal emperor.
Advocate Mahendra Pratap Singh, president of Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Mukti Nyas, said “he will present the key piece of evidence before Allahabad HC and SC”.
“Based on historical evidence, we had mentioned in our petition that Aurangzeb had issued a decree in 1670 CE to demolish the temple. Following this, the Shahi Idgah Mosque was built there. Now, ASI, in response to RTI’s query, has attested the information. We will present the ASI’s response to HC during the hearing on February 22,” he said.
