Elon Musk shares tweet falsely claiming ‘media blackout’ over death of Georgia college student

[ad_1]

Elon Musk shared a tweet on Sunday claiming that the recent murder of a college student in Georgia was being subjected to a “media blackout.” But the murder of a 26-year-old Venezuelan citizen, allegedly in the US illegally, has been covered extensively by almost every media outlet in the country.

“The main way the media lies is to control the narrative,” Musk tweeted. Sunday night,

Musk’s tweet shared an article by pseudonymous right-wing influencer Zerhaze that was published on Sunday with the headline, “Media blackout over illegal immigrant who murdered GI student.”

What evidence does Zerhaze present for the claim that mainstream media outlets are ignoring this murder? Nobody, if you really are read the article, The author simply claims that it is true:

Although the tragedy of Riley’s murder is fit for a true crime mystery series that Netflix would cash in on in a heartbeat, her death has received little attention by her mainstream media colleagues.

The article falsely asserts that “the media establishment is silent about the murder of Laken Riley,” despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. All anyone has to do is type the name of the victim or suspect, Jose Antonio Ibarra, into Google News and they will see dozens of articles about the murder.

A small sampling of mainstream news outlets that have covered this story, some of which have covered it with multiple articles over the past few days, is below:

But, then again, you don’t have to take our word for it. Just go to news.google.com and check for yourself. If there is a “media blackout”, whatever that means, it has been horribly executed.

Musk has seemed obsessed Most recently crime and illegal immigration, two topics that have excited the billionaire on his social media platform X in recent months. And these issues are evidence in their eyes that Joe Biden should not get a second term as president in the upcoming 2024 election.

As the owner of a social media company, Musk clearly has an incentive to make sure his platform is the place to find the “real story.” And with other big platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Threads skipping news content, While there is some truth in the fact that social media has given previously marginalized communities and small publishers a more prominent voice, it is intellectually dishonest to claim that X is where most news first comes from.

Musk tweeted on September 29, 2023, “Newspapers basically just report what they read yesterday on X LMAO.” many times,

Nine times out of ten, someone is complaining “Why isn’t the media covering this?” On social media they are referring to a story they learned about through mainstream media outlets. And the tragic murder of Laken Riley is no different, as we can see by how many news sites have written about this story.

It’s great to have social media as an alternative medium to amplify smaller voices when needed. But if you really think this particular murder isn’t getting enough coverage, you need to learn to use Google better.

Musk did not respond to emailed questions sent to X on Sunday night. We will update this post if we get any response.
