The new login page uses a horizontal layout instead of a vertical layout. The corners are less sharp, and the big blue login button has gone from rectangular to pill-shaped. The page surrounding the main window has changed from gray to white, and there is less uniformity in the size of different lines of text and logos, allowing more negative space between words and buttons. This makes the page look less cluttered, even though it maintains the same number of design elements.
According to Google, the updated login page will be available to all users on both mobile and desktop, including enterprise workspace accounts and personal accounts. The rollout began on February 21, 2024, and will affect every Google user on the planet between now and March 24.
Google is trying to do this update gradually. Users have seen warnings letting them know a change is coming, and the login page has remained unchanged for a much longer period of time than the rest of Google’s services, which have seen improvements across the board over the past few years.
This is because, unlike the format of, for example, Gmail or YouTube, the login page is one of the most sensitive touch points on Google’s platform, if not the entire Internet. Users need to trust and recognize that they are viewing the real, authentic login page, and not an attempt by a hacker to phishing their credentials.
