You don’t need to know much about filmmaking influenced by visual effects Of godzilla minus one, movie stars a giant monster, So even if you don’t know practical from digital, you might be surprised at the fact Godzilla looks great And done so well, you’ll believe it’s real.
Surprisingly though, Godzilla himself probably has the least impressive visual effects in the entire film. A new video released by Toho lifts the curtain on the film Oscar-nominated visual effects Which, yes, includes Godzilla. But it also shows the incredible way the team achieved all the water sequences, recreated the old cities and much more. Plus, the video goes on to explain how all of this was accomplished by a small number of people, probably cooking their food in a Marvel movie. Check it out.
So, again, while Godzilla certainly looks amazing in the film thanks to the team’s VFX, I watched it and was mesmerized by how everything else was achieved. How all the ships were built using just one small set. How the actors themselves had to bend back and forth to simulate the waves. How little of the crowd scenes were shot in practical terms compared to what we saw in the film.
Plus, brief scenes inside the director’s offices Takashi Yamazaki It’s an absolute pleasure to wander around when everyone is working. Even if they were captured after the fact, which they almost certainly were, the way it conveys the size of the team and streamlines the process is a nice little window into the filmmaking process.
godzilla minus one, io9’s pick for the best genre film of 2023, is still running in some theatres. Fingers crossed we might get a physical copy sooner rather than later.
